Your Rights as a Patient in Ontario

In general, as a patient, you have a right to:

Receive safe and proper care.

Have a medical professional clearly explain health problems and treatments to you.

Ask questions and express concerns.

Be assured that personal information is confidential.

Request the transfer of your health records to another medical professional; you may be charged a fee.

Give or refuse consent for any procedure, and for any reason.

Participate in health care decisions.

Request a second opinion; within reason.

Request to access your health information records.

In case of violation of your rights:

 

As a patient, your rights are protected by laws such as the Health Care Consent Act, the Long-Term Care Act, and the Mental Health Act. If a health care professional violates your rights in any way, you can complain to the appropriate regulatory organization. 

 For an issue dealing with violation of your privacy, you can make a complaint to the Information and Privacy Commissioner. If a physician acts unprofessionally or discriminates against you based on race, class, gender, sexuality, or for any other reason you can file a complaint at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO).
